Soiled Doves

There was a time in the old wild west that Judge Roy Bean was the only law west of the Pecos. Judge Bean was a hard drinking, hard fighting, moral man who surrounded himself with gunfighters and soiled doves (dance hall girls). As the only law west of the Pecos, this violent, imprudent man finally settled down with one of the soiled doves, content to be the law who dispensed his brand of law without restrictions and living by his own code.

He hung rustlers and thieves, assassins, and disturbers of his peace without mercy, but at least by his views a moral man willing and able to clean up the wildest patch of the west. He cleaned up his patch and settled down with a saloon girl, one of the soiled doves, and wrested his dusty corner of the west from the criminals and the dregs of society.

The problem was the soiled doves. Where Sundays were days of leisure, usually after Saturday nights of drinking, fighting, playing cards, and the usual ruckus over who pulled what card from his sleeve, the soiled doves saw their town becoming citified and tame and began to insist on spending Sunday mornings listening to the parson preaching his sermon while they sang in the choir. The old rough and ready frontier town had become safer, filled with the good people of town wearing finer to Sunday service and dealing harshly with newcomers who were less refined Sunday go to meeting trollops. The newly refined ladies didn't see to the morals of newcomers to the saloon and the town who chose the less moral portion of their upstanding population to get rid of.

Judge Roy Bean had less luck with the moral and upstanding female population of town. He recognized his soiled doves, especially his own personal soiled dove, possessed of a prim and proper demeanor that followed with the change in the town's status and high-toned feminine population, as newly whitewashed doves who didn't take to the rough and ready life of a frontier town, especially when the frontier town got a brand new general store, stagecoach stop, and restaurants just like the establishments back East. He realized his happy bachelor days when he was the Only Law West of the Pecos were behind him and he must also change with the times. He had come up in the world, no longer the Law West of the Pecos when he couldn't even handle his own soiled dove who was now the last word West of the Pecos and the arbiter of taste and refinement now that her soiled past was behind her and she wore the finest clothes from back East, a lady who would be welcome in the best and wealthiest homes of the wealthy town matrons.

Judge Roy Bean was tied in eternal wedlock to a dove white as snow that couldn't remember back to the rough and wild old days and wouldn't own up to her past as the Madam of the town's biggest and best brothel. Mention of her past brought out the vapors and fainting as though she had been tarred and feathered with the tar and feathers that bedecked dance hall girls that failed to please the gunslingers, thieves, and highwaymen that once flocked to her saloon upon arriving in town. Heaven forfend anyone who mentioned the past in her hearing or whisper that the silver dagger she still kept in her corset was the sharpest and deadliest blade in the state.

With refinement came morals higher than the mangy cats tussling over the drunks they rolled in the
streets, passed out cold from too many drugged drinks, to pay for their drinks and dances. Passing out was no excuse for not paying the bill. There were two laws West of the Pecos, and Judge Roy Bean was kinder law. Judge Roy Bean would only hang you by the neck until you were dead. His wife, Madam Moustache, would empty your pockets and slit your gizzard when you failed to pay. Then Judge Roy Bean would arrest you for vagrancy when she'd emptied your pockets. The hangover in the morning was less painful than the fleecing and jail was quiet -- at least until you were sentenced to hang and then that short drop would put a kink in your gullet that lasted until the undertaker filled it with dirt after you were buried.

That's the thing about the wild west, it was wild until you made that short drop.

Today, in modern times, we don't have the Wild West and all the soiled doves are in church come Sunday morning where they warble their hearts out for God and where the memories begin when civilization arrives in Judge Roy Bean's town. Instead we have Democrats whose memories are even shorter than those of Judge Bean's soiled doves and just as full of righteous indignation if anyone has the gall to remember the wild west when they were the rowdiest and wildest dancehall girls West of the Pecos showing their garters and their frilly bottoms on stage at Madame Moustache's Brothel and Saloon.

The thing about whitewash is that with a good hand and a thick enough paint even Tom Sawyer can cover the worst of the dirt so that soiled doves can hide the past and refashion the edifice into a Sunday meeting house fit to entertain the best of the best from back East with nothing soiled showing even on the worst gullywasher day of the week, especially Sunday.

Of course, the Democrats have a lot worse to whitewash than rolling drunks and knocking out
unsuspecting cowhands and gunslingers. Their soiled past history settles into the ranks of the Ku Klux Klan, Jim Crow laws, and eating two helpings of the shit pie the maid shat out that morning. Whitewash is good for everything, especially covering up all that soiled, shitty past. Give that whitewash and refinement  a little time and it will gleam like a ghost town in the noon day Texas sun.

Power Comes With Knowledge

If you pay attention.

There is so much more to slavery than white privilege. Slavery was practiced by every nation for thousands of years and slaves were often of the same nation and color. Muslims and Islam have practiced slavery the longest and across more nations than we realize. Time to pick up a book and look farther than your neighborhood.

Illegal immigration: Eater or Eaten

I'll bet you never watched Babylon 5 or realized you watched contestants playing the Game of Life. Forget that B5 hung in space over a dead world. Forget the gate technology that allowed ships to traverse the darkness from civilization to civilization. See the episodes as ripped from the headlines depicting current events. The two players in the Universe were the Shadows, the Great Evil, and the Vorlons, the Light. They were more than Evil and Good. They were warring siblings fighting their battles through the people of the Universe, the younger races that looked up to the Shadows and the Light as we look to our political parties. The Shadows and the Vorlons were the two sides of a coin, separated by perspective, the two sides of the Galactic Mirror. No different, except in our perception of them. Ultimately, Shadows and Vorlons enslaved the younger races. The Shadows and the Vorlons were the masters and the younger races their slaves, puppets playing out the end game, choosing which side of the mirror reflected what they saw, the image of their deepest desires.

Mr. Mordon was the human face of the Shadows whose only question was: What do you want? The answer bound the person to the Darkness or the Light, reflections of siblings, remnants of the Old Race, brothers or sisters depending on your point of view, destroying worlds and systems in their seemingly eternal tug-of-war. The Shadows preferred kicking over an ant hill to stir up the ants to battle other ants so the winner emerged as a stronger, smarter, and better ant while the Vorlons nurtured the races, tampering with their DNA to make them stronger, better, and smarter than the ants that preceded the ants the Vorlons reshaped to create better ants. It didn't matter which species died as long as the winning side was their side. The Vorlons cared that their nurturing would win and the Shadows preferred their aggression would be the winning side.

How is the illegal immigrant question different? You may think it's a matter of degree, but essentially it is the same. It is always the same. The only thing that has changed is the label we put on it to make what has become immature, irresponsible, and wrong acceptable and palatable. It is the same thing it always was and the new label changes nothing but our perception of the problem. Labeling garbage as art or social justice. It is still garbage. The Conservatives are the Shadows and Liberals are the Vorlons. The methods vary, but the end is the same. Slaves are slaves whether they are nurtured or forced to action. Illegal immigration is just another label for slavery. All the arguments for the rights of illegal immigrants and the liberal calls for social justice change nothing. White washing manure doesn't change manure. It may look better painted white, but it is still manure.

When we discuss illegal immigration we are still discussing slavery. Let's get that straight from the outset. Give us your poor, your starving, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free. They are people willing to give up everything so their children have food, shelter, and clothing, a reason to get up in the morning to earn a few pesetas or pennies or dollars to buy food, shelter, and clothing to make the future less frightening and more comfortable. Centuries ago the system was called feudalism. A lord claimed title over the land and the serfs who inhabited the land and took what they wanted from the serfs: their daughters' virginity, the food from their mouths, and their freedom to choose their own lives. Though the resources were the Lord's due (determined by the Lord and taken from the people who had no say), those resources were stolen.

Feudalism became colonialism and serfs became slaves, conquered tribes, the losers in tribal warfare or stolen to be sold as slaves for money and goods that could be sold or traded for more food, shelter, and clothing. The serfs were slaves to their Masters as surely as the tribesmen, women, and children were slaves to be chained, bound, and packed like sardines in the holds of ships and given just enough to eat to keep them alive until they could be hosed down and sold at auction. Tribes preyed on their neighbors as predators prey on the old, the sick, the weak and vulnerable, and the young to be brought down and killed to feed themselves and their offspring. It has always been thus: the larger and more powerful prey on the weaker and their continuation was assured. Big fish prey on little fish and the bottom feeders get the scraps, but every species wins as they prey on weaker species, and sometimes on each other, in the never ending struggle to continue. Might makes right. Vegetarians point to the grass eaters as harmless because grass eaters consume only grass. What about the grass? Does grass not live? Does grass not grow, procreate, and live? So you choose not to eat animals, make a point of eating nothing with a face; you eat plants. You are harmless, as harmless as a cow, sheep, or buffalo. What if plants don't want to be eaten? What if plants have feelings? Are you not destroying another species for food, to quiet the rumbling in your belly? You kill to eat. Plant or animal, you end their life to continue your own. That is the cycle of life on this planet and in this time. That is also the reality of slavery. Illegal immigrants are the slaves who choose to walk through any danger, endure any hardship so they can feed, clothe, and house themselves by any means necessary. Those means in this time and in this country mean breaking this country's laws, the United States of America's laws to sell their labor, their time, and themselves for food so they can continue another day, another hour, another minute as long as they continue to exist. When this country was a colony belonging to Great Britain, an extension of the Great British Empire, people sold themselves and their children for a specified period so they too could come to this unexplored land to make their fortune, but really to ensure they would have a place to live, clothes to wear, and food to eat. These indentured slaves were guaranteed a certain quality of life and they were fed, usually with the scraps from their Master's table, but they were fed. Captured enemies were sold to enterprising men and sent across the vast oceans in the bellies of ships where they might die, but they might also live to be sold as slaves. Slaves were cheaper than indentured servants and there were no contracts. Masters paid more for indentured servants than slaves and that cut into profits. It is a simple equation. Cost must never equal or exceed profits. Smart Masters spent less in producing a crop in order to reap great rewards. Indentured servants cost more than slaves. Indentured servants worked only for the term of the contract. Slaves worked until they were traded, sold, or died. Pay one price and slaves will work, breed more slaves who will breed even more slaves. Slaves were an investment for the future that continued paying dividends for generations to come. Illegal immigrants are the latest label for slaves. These slaves provide the labor to pick the crops that will be sold at the market and cost less than hiring documented workers. That means more profit after the crops are sold. Call them resources, undocumented workers, illegal immigrants, whatever label you choose to salve your conscience and give slavery a makeover. In the end, these poor huddled masses are still slaves, resources that will make more money for their employers. These resources with faces and names are the latest on the list to be plundered, raped, and pillaged. Yes, there are good employers (masters) and bad employers, but ultimately they are Masters and the people are slaves. You are either the big fish that eats or the smaller fish that is eaten. No matter the perspective and no matter how you agonize over the rights of the fish that ends up as food, the fish is still eaten and nourishes another. Why else would the wealthy and powerful hire illegal immigrants? It is not to save them from poverty and ignorance. It is to cut the cost of the labor so that there is more money to buy bigger and better comfort. It's economics. The best economy is one where the cost never exceeds the profits and comfort at a cheaper price is much more comfortable. It all comes down to degree. Will you sell yourself for enough food to live another minute, another hour, another day or will you sell someone else for your comfort to someone who is buying so they will have more money to buy more comfort? It is always one species preying on a smaller, weaker, more vulnerable species. Have no doubts about that. Whether you eat meat or plants, you prey on life. What do you want? When you play the Game of Life, you eat or are eaten.

Quick and Dirty

No time for adding a photo, although I'd like to (thanks, Ted, for that little embellishment), but I'm supposed to be working and researching and concentrating on so many other things. I just have this to say today.

The government, which is coming more under the control of the global elite, has been lying to the people. We, the people. Not just in the USA but in every country around the world. We thought we were free to choose our lives and our paths and many have emigrated to the USA because of those freedoms, but we have all been fooled.  We were never free. We only have the illusion of freedom. The only thing that has changed is that more of we, the people, are waking up (pardon the grammatical faux pas) and realizing that we do indeed living in the Matrix and are not in control of anything. The global elite want one thing, the same thing that the elite have wanted from the beginning of civilization -- elbow room without slaves mucking up the view. We are the slaves.

The New World Order, a phrase that keeps popping up every few generations or years or eras, is not benevolent and it doesn't want peace, not if war and terrorism and destruction will keep the population numbers down. The elite don't want a compromise. They want total control. Why do you think they have fomented wars, steeped us in fear, and tried to finish us off by nurturing race wars and differences?

Zero Population Growth was not enough because not everyone bought into the scheme to limit their number of children and then those pesky do-gooders and charities took the children exposed to the elements and brought them in to raise until some well to do do-gooder American or pampered Brit or cosseted and childless couple arrived to adopt the child and raise it on their own. Those do-gooders didn't know they were interfering in a global scheme to eradicate at least 95% of the population so there would be more room for the elite. Stupid slaves. Shouldn't have taught them to read and write and do math. Happens every time you let the slaves have a few perks and a little freedom. The only thing slaves are supposed to do is work until they die in pain and suffering and breed enough slaves to take their turn at the  and work until they die in pain and suffering while breeding the next generation of slaves.

The slaves aren't supposed to live longer and better lives. That's more do-gooders throwing monkey wrenches into the works and now there are more slaves to get rid of and the numbers keep rising. The slaves are supposed to die. That is why wars were created to decrease the population. That is why viruses are created to eradicate wide swaths of the population. Wars and diseases work for a while, but those pesky buggers, the do-gooders and the slaves, rebound, breed even more, and take up so much space. We keep trying to evict them but, like roaches, they refuse to die -- at least die long enough to do any good.

They dropped a nuclear bomb on Japan and now Japan is fuller than ever of people. Okay, the bomb left some disease behind, but not enough and there were not enough dead, so we guided the slaves to create newer and better and more devastating weapons of mass destruction. That isn't working either, not with this kumbayah attitude spread by the do-gooders. Pesky do-gooders like flies in the pristine ointment.

The only answer was to whip up the jihadists with their penchant for killing everyone and taking trophy heads. Works well for a while, but then the jihadists take their own slaves or let some people off if they convert. Tell me how lasting a conversion is when the enemy converts under the threat of death. You get a few zealots and die-hard converts, but mostly you get lip service just like the Jews during the Spanish Inquisition; they converted and secretly continued practicing their Jewish beliefs. Mega-FAIL.

And it is no different with converting to any belief. The conversion is strong when the converts' allegiance is new and then the converts begin to feel safe and sneak around practicing the beliefs of their childhood, the same beliefs they gave up. Time to cut the heads off all converts and have done with it. Converts will always return to the source of their beliefs, unless there is a conversion of the heart and that is seldom guaranteed. Not worth the effort to let them live. Better to kill them outright and have done.

Allowing the enemy to pay a tax seems like a good idea, more money for the coffers, but the hassle isn't worth the rewards, especially when the pittance the enemy pays doesn't come close to equalling their taxes, and the enemy continues to work against us. Oh, we can sway a few, get them to commit crimes you wouldn't believe, encourage them to sacrifice their friends and colleagues and anyone who believes in them, but the sacrifices are never enough and the result is either a convert waiting for a chance to destroy the ruling elite, us, or a murderer who would sacrifice anyone to their greed for power and their belief that they will be saved from death and the fires of the hell we will unleash on this earth. Fools! Better to get rid of them, along with the rest of the slaves and converts and have done.

We tried to limit your numbers by putting poisons in your foods, but that didn't work so well. You got fat on the poisons, developed a tolerance, and doctors kept you alive, if only marginally, while you suckled the government teat and bred even more slaves that would rather suck the government teat than do the work you were bred to do. Massive FAIL again.

We have promoted wars, but someone always wins, and there are still so many combatants survive to breed or end up on the government dole for far too long. We have cooked up all kinds of fake viruses and PR campaigns composed of lies and fear to keep the slaves going the right way down the Highway to Hell, but those do-gooders always figure it out and, no matter how we destroy their livelihood and ruin their lives and their businesses, they keep coming back, they keep talking, they keep spreading the word so it is harder for the fake viruses and smear campaigns to work. The slaves keep slipping the noose and far too few will slip the noose even if we fake an alien invasion or the Second Coming of that Jesus do-gooder. The only plan that really works leaves nothing but scorched earth and, though we can scorch a lot of earth, our enemies will keep us from the Full Burn.

Politics keeps the slaves occupied for a while but even when we get our own people in and line up another of the converts, someone (a lot of someones) always figures it out and we're back to the same convert problem. Our political stooges have a taste of power and the greedy converts want more, more for themselves, more for their families (hooray, more greedy converts), more for their friends, more, more, more. Or they leave a bloody trail so long and so wide and so hard to erase that their worth is far outweighed by their incompetence and greed. No matter how we rig things to work in our favor, we always end up at the same point -- wondering how to get rid of 95% of the slaves so we can have a peaceful and quietly productive life for ourselves without having to share the resources or our space.

We haven't balked at poisoning the planet or the slaves because it's a sacrifice we are willing to make. We know the planet is not such a fragile thing even though we've told the slaves it is as fragile as a warm egg with a thin shell. Even there, the do-gooders did their best to prove our convert scientists and government stooges wrong -- and they did -- and the slaves people believed it mostly no matter how we discredited, demonized, ruined, and ridiculed the do-gooders. Slaves always listen and listening leads to doubt no matter how strongly the slave believes the lies and doubt leads to more listening and more doubt until before you know it almost no one believes. Look at government. How many of the slaves actually believe the government works for them any more? Not enough and only the slaves that are already sucking at the government dole; they'd believe anything as long as they can fill their greedy bellies on the dole. More converts and you know where that ends up. FAIL, FAIL, FAIL!

Time is running out and we have not managed to solve the slave population problem and we have been at it for thousands of years. Never should have created the slaves in the first place. They have been nothing but a royal nuisance from the beginning. Too bad that Flood didn't work. Do-gooders getting in the way and saving the nasty little buggers. Yes, even among the elite, there are do-gooders, but we have to increase our numbers somehow and interbreeding hasn't worked. Interbreeding only ends up coming back to bite us in the backside with madness, weak and diseased offspring, and eventually a need for reinvigoration from -- you've got it -- more slaves. It's a conundrum, a Mobius strip, a never ending problem with no solution, except for total anihilation, and we have a right to continue our species.

That is all. Disperse.

Review: Red Rising by Pierce Brown

There is nothing so satisfying as finding a new author, except finding a new author of really good, solid science fiction. That author is Pierce Brown and the book is Red Rising.

When I started the book, I was not impressed. Brown thrust me into the world of a Helldiver and the mining caste of Reds, but the true nature of the Reds didn't become apparent until I was much farther along in the book. The first chapter was all right and the writing was clear, if a bit overwhelming with all the Helldiver action and pitvipers and such, but the story was was weak. I could find no connection to Darrow at all. He's a kid in my world but a man in his own world and a newlywed and a powerful man in his own with a strong drive to excel and exceed the limits. I did have a grudging respect for him on that score, but the beginning was still slow and I stopped reading Red Rising to read other more interesting books.

I came back determined to read through to the end and suddenly Brown caught fire. Darrow won his Laurel but didn't get it because the system would not allow a Red of his clan to win. As he watched his prize and the food going to the same clan that always won regardless of how much the Lykos clan produced, I began to get a feel for Darrow's world and his wife, Eo's, dream. What followed was rage making and poignant and the real world of Mars and the Color Caste began to emerge into a light dawning on a much bigger story that moved forward with harrowing speed and force. That is when I was well and truly caught into the juggernaut that is Red Rising.

I was fooled by Brown's almost laconic beginning pace, in spite of the Helldiver action, into thinking Darrow's story was just another knock-off science fiction story. I was wrong. The pace and suspense build and build to a focused and sustained screaming Hell ride into a story that pits strength and cunning against a decadent and decaying society in the first throes of its privileged demise. The ante continues to spiral upward until Darrow assaults the gods and heaven itself in a stomach churning, adrenaline thundering story with an ending that illustrates just how far Darrow has come from the comforting confines of mines and his world view. He has seen the stars and taken hold of destiny with a fierce grip.

Red Rising is a heady mix of hard and soft science fiction with a fiercely wild heart. Although based loosely on the Roman and Greek pantheon of gods and goddesses, Brown has build a solar system of stunning breadth where slavery is a colorful necessity and power corrupts and changes those that can adapt in new ways. The science and medicine is fascinating and the political maneuvering breath taking in its scope, reminiscent of the best of Robert A. Heinlein and Roger Zelazny without the use of their hierarchies or ruling systems. This is quite simply the best science fiction I have read in decades. The only downside is that this is the first of a trilogy and doesn't debut until February 2014 and I have at least two more years to wait for the next installment.

With a first book like Red Rising, I anxiously await the rest of Brown's vision.

For its slow start, I give 4/5 stars, but I'd say this book is closer to 4.5 stars. It is after all only one chapter that fails to sing with the power and intensity of the rest of the novel.

NOTE:  Red Rising is not due out until February 2014, but this book is definitely one that should be on your list. Get it when it debuts in 2014.  It is worth the wait.
